What is the Magentaverse? The Color of the Year in 2023: the vivid and lively Viva Magenta!

Just like every year, designers, fashion professionals, graphic designers, interior designers, make-up artists and nail techs have all been waiting for the announcement of the Pantone Color Institute regarding the new Color of the Year. After the purple periwinkle Very Peri (Color of the Year in 2022), which embraced the calming properties of blue fused with a dynamic purple-red undertone, Pantone Color Institute has chosen Viva Magenta (Code 18-1750), a fabulous bright-red carmine shade as the Color of the Year in 2023.

Pantone describes this winner magenta shade as brave, animated, inclusive, powerful and empowering. It encourages experimentation and self-expression, and as such, it is a perfect choice for the nail tech industry. As they stated, “Viva Magenta is an unconventional color for an unconventional time”. Leatrice Eiseman, the Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute shared that they drew inspiration from nature, since this shade is inspired by the red of cochineal, a bright-red pigment extracted from the tiny cochineal insect.

What is “Pantone”?

The Pantone Color Institute is known for creating a universal language of color: a color scale that identifies specific color shades to allow perfect matching. It is hard to believe but they have been announcing the Color of the Year for 20 years, setting the trend for industries like printing, graphic design and fashion. Last year’s Color of the Year, Very Peri was absolutely unique, since it was not selected from the existing shades in the Pantone Matching System, but specifically created by the Institute itself.
